COVID-19 UPDATES

COVID-19 UPDATE

Due to the global pandemic caused by COVID-19, live music has been hit hard. In the academic year 2020-21, EUBB has been unable to rehearse and socialise in person, and carried on socialising through weekly online socials. However, as we head into the academic year 2021-22, it is looking more hopeful that EUBB will be able to rehearse in person! Below are updates based on new COVID-19 restriction announcements made by the Scottish Government and Edinburgh University on what is safe for EUBB to do in person and what may be done online. What EUBB is doing both in-person and online will be listed below.

Scottish Government Guidance Relevant to EUBB – Edinburgh

As of 5/10/2021, Edinburgh is in  Beyond Level 0 lockdown restriction:

There is no current restriction on the number of individuals from different households that can meet, and there are no current restrictions on the number of households that can meet, in all environments.

There is no physical distancing required by law - however certain locations may still request this.

If you are medically able to be vaccinated against COVID-19, you are strongly advised to by both the Scottish Government and Health Care Professionals. Scottish COVID-19 Vaccination centres have walk-in vaccinations for those who have not received appointments.

Find out where your nearest walk-in vaccination clinic here.

The whole of Scotland is currently Beyond Level 0 - travel to all areas of Scotland is permitted, as well as England and Wales. Check the government guidance on international travel. Face masks are still required in indoor public spaces - worn over the mouth and nose , including shops, public transport, cafes/restaurants and indoor learning environments. All individuals over the age of 12 years old must wear a mask unless medically exempt.

Vaccination Status -

From 5am on 1 October, COVID vaccine certificates are needed to get into the following higher risk settings in Scotland:

  • late night premises with music, which serve alcohol at any time between midnight and 5am and have a designated place for dancing for customers

  • indoor events (unseated) with 500 or more people

  • outdoor events (unseated) with 4,000 or more people

  • any event with more than 10,000 people

Everyone attending these settings and events must be able to show they have been fully vaccinated (unless exempt) to gain entry.

Some premises not covered by the above examples may still require vaccination status. They must follow regulation under the Equality Act and Human Rights.

Evidence of your vaccination status can be proven on the NHS Scotland Covid-19 Status App or via a requested paper copy.

Performing Arts Guidance

Scottish Government Guidance for Performing Arts requires positioning musicians within the chosen rehearsal space – outdoor and indoor rehearsals allowed for non-professional performing arts of any size Beyond Level 0. Back-to-back or side-to-side positioning of musicians whenever possible is recommended. Musicians must wear a facemask unless they physically unable to whilst playing.

No musicians participating can have COVID-19 symptoms. If an individual has symptoms of COVID-19, self isolation is required, and it is advised that COVID-19 tests are conducted. If you have received your second dose two weeks prior to exposure to a positive case of COVID-19, you may not need to self-isolate, but you are required to get a PCR test immediately.  Go to the NHS Website for list of symptoms, self isolation requirements and to book COVID-19 tests and guidance on taking them.

It is advised COVID-19 tests should be conducted before rehearsal. Face Masks must be always worn during rehearsal unless medically exempt or are unable to play the instrument (such as Brass Instruments). It is recommended that a limited, smaller group of individuals rehearse together where possible. For non-professional groups, such as EUBB there is no size limitation on rehearsal or performance size.

Indoor and outdoor performances are allowed in Beyond Level 0. Non-professional performances are asked to follow the same guidance as professional performers.  All those able to wear facemasks must wear facemasks at indoor events.

The Scottish Government Guidance for Performing Arts recommends avoiding sharing equipment (e.g., music stands), and disinfecting any equipment shared between uses and always between users. It is also recommended that equipment being hired (e.g., instruments) should be limited, and responsibility of cleaning hired instruments discussed between suppliers (EUBB and the individual hiring the instrument). Cleaning of instruments by musicians is recommended where possible. Items are recommended to be quarantined for 72hrs before use. Any audience members should not be permitted to touch the stage, instruments or any other objects used by performers. It is recommended to broadcast performances without a live audience to reduce transmission and maintain physical distancing.

For further information for running of music rehearsals and general COVID-19 restrictions, please see the Scottish Government COVID-19 guidance for the performing arts.

Edinburgh University Student Association (EUSA)

Edinburgh University and thus its societies - such as EUBB - are required to follow Scottish Government Restrictions, as seen above. EUSA states that societies must:

  • Adhere to the current Scottish government guidelines: view the main guidelines here

  • Maintain social distancing at all times – this distance will be dictated in the above guidance

  • Adhere to the guideline capacities outlined at all times

  • Follow all appropriate and relevant hygiene measures, ensuring you minimise sharing equipment at all times

  • Wear PPE where and when appropriate

For more information from EUSA, go to their Updated COVID-19 Policy for Societies

EUSA is currently planning a mixture of both in-person and online events within Welcome Week (13/09 - 17/09/2021). Priority of venues, including the rehearsal space EUBB uses, is being given to academic studies. See more on the Edinburgh University's College of Arts Pages

EUBB Plans

EUBB runs its official rehearsals and socials within the Edinburgh University Academic Year. As of 17/09/2021, Academic Year 2021-22 has started. We are currently conducting our in-person rehearsals every Friday from 6:45 - 9:00pm, in the Life Church. Due to number restrictions, tickets must be acquired every week, for each rehearsal. The maximum capacity is 50. As EUBB moves to indoor rehearsals, you will be required to wear a facemask at all times expect when you are playing a brass instrument. Percussionists are required to wear a facemask whilst rehearsing indoors at all times. This is in line with the Scottish Government guidance.

EUBB does not require evidence of vaccination, nor does the venue Life Church (which we are currently rehearsing in) to attend rehearsals. Teviot Bar and Pub, where we usually attend after rehearsal socials is not currently requiring vaccination status. Please be aware that these venues may change their policy, or that government guidance may change to include such venues.

Please be aware that occasional socials that may be at other locations (e.g. nightclubs, bars etc) may require evidence of vaccination status for entry and participation, as a legal requirement by the Scottish Government.
