ABOUT

Rehearsals are every Friday night from 6.45 to 9 pm in the Reid Concert Hall and at the end of each semester we perform a concert so everyone can come along and see us perform.

Edinburgh University Brass Band, affectionately known to everyone as EUBB, was founded in Spring 2005 and since then has continued to grow and provide fun and joy for all. We take pride in being the only University brass band in Scotland. As a non-auditioning band we welcome everyone of all levels of ability and experience, you don't even need to be a student at The University of Edinburgh to join!

Set up for brass and percussion players from The University of Edinburgh and beyond, we welcome anyone who plays the Cornet, Trumpet, Soprano Cornet, Flugelhorn, Tenor Horn, Baritone, Trombone, Euphonium, Tuba and of course Percussion.

Rehearsals for the Band begin at the end of Welcome Week at the University of Edinburgh, usually taking place in the Reid Concert Hall at 6.45 pm every Friday. After rehearsals, we visit the pub where people get drinks (of the alcoholic and non-alcoholic variety), socialise, and relax after a hard week's work. At the end of the semester we hold our annual Winter Concert in the Reid Concert Hall - in the past we have performed another concert at Blackhall St Columba's Church for the congregation. Throughout the year we undertake some busking, especially carolling at Christmas time, where we entertain the crowds and raise some funds for the band.

Rehearsals start back again in January as the University goes back after the winter holidays, working towards the goal of the annual spring concert before the University's spring holiday. This is an exciting semester for us with many events taking place.

Every year we have our Weekend Away where members of the band take a weekend off and travel somewhere in Scotland. Traditionally there is a group meal and a movie, which of course is 'Brassed Off'. The weekend is a fun time for all and a good opportunity to get to know new and old members.

A few weeks after this we have a joint rehearsal and ceilidh with our Sister Societies: Wind Band, Clarinet Choir and Female Voice Choir. This is a good opportunity to mix with some of the other music societies in the university. Later in the year, we have our Annual General Meeting (AGM) where we decide on the important business of the band and elect a committee for the next year. After the AGM we usually have a group meal to celebrate.

During the exam season in May, we usually hold informal rehearsals where members of the band can suggest pieces to be played and even get the opportunity to conduct the band. In June the Whit Friday contests take place and in previous years players would travel down to Saddleworth to watch, however in 2019 we took the decision to go and compete. This took a lot of hard work and we even had to learn how to march, but as everyone who went will tell you it was a great experience and definitely worth the effort. Hopefully, we can return next year to the contests and make it an annual tradition.
